How often does asbestos need re-inspecting?

Much asbestos in good condition is safest left where it is. But once it stays, it has to be watched. HSE says all asbestos-containing materials in good condition must be regularly inspected to check they stay that way.

At least once a year

Your asbestos register should be updated at least every 12 months, as part of your yearly asbestos management review, and before any change that affects the risk from a material.

Sooner when something changes

  • After any job that touched a material
  • After accidental damage
  • When a new person becomes responsible for the building

What a re-inspection involves

The inspector goes back to every material in your register, checks whether its condition has changed, rescores it and updates the actions. There’s no new sampling unless something new turns up or the scope changes. You get an updated register and a list of what changed.
